Our Ten-Year Program

A Ten-Year Promise

Beginning in 7th grade, Breakthrough New York supports students to and through college – a ten-year commitment.

Middle School

School Year Enrichment

7th and 8th grade students participate in bi-weekly after-school workshops that provide homework help and academic enrichment. Programming takes place at our partners schools in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan.

Summer Learning

Rising 7th – 9th graders participate in Breakthrough’s signature five-week summer program. Students build their academic and social-emotional skills through courses in literature, writing, and STEM and explore new interests through electives such as journalism and theater.

High School Options

8th grade students receive individualized guidance in applying to excellent high schools that will put them on a college-bound pathway. BTNY provides free SSAT/SHSAT test prep, interview practice, and financial aid support. Students gain admissions to the top public, private, and parochial high schools in New York City.

Academic Seminars & Career Exploration

Through “Super Saturday” workshops, students develop 21st century skills, such as how to set and pursue your own vision, identity development, and time management. Academic seminars provide college-level discussions around current events and youth activism.

Summer Enrichment

We connect students with study abroad programs, internships, and volunteering opportunities and provide opportunity grants where there are financial barriers.

College Admissions Guidance

College access mentors coach upperclassmen through the college admissions process, including test prep, interview practice, writing essays, and financial aid applications. Students meet with admissions officers and visit a diverse range of campuses to find the best-fit school.

It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to learn French and go to France. It was a really exciting opportunity and something I’d been wanting to do for a long time….Breakthrough was providing an opportunity grant where you fill out an application about why you want to study abroad and how it would benefit you. The opportunity grant included a recommendation to the program and $500 for the trip. I ended up using it for tuition!
