Breakthrough New York works within the country’s largest public school system and with colleges nationwide to create excellent and equitable educational experiences.

Middle Schools

Breakthrough New York recruits students in 6th grade to join our program. We work with teachers and guidance counselors to reach as many promising students as possible. Once admitted to BTNY, we provide students with after-school and summer enrichment and high school admissions guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I learn more about Breakthrough and help my students apply?

If you’re interested in partnering with BTNY, please reach out to Enya O’Riordan, Data & Admissions Director: [email protected], 917-258-6564

Where can I download more information?

In addition to reviewing our website, you can download our Admissions Packet here in English, Spanish, Mandarin, or Bengali. We also encourage you to check out our Information Session recording on our Admissions page to learn more about our program and admissions process.

Do students need to have a certain GPA or state test scores to apply?

You can find a full list of our eligibility criteria on our Admissions page. BTNY does require that students have at least an 83% in their core classes by the first marking period of their 6th grade year. For the 2021-2022 admissions cycle, BTNY will not be reviewing state test scores as part of our admissions process.

Does Breakthrough provide transportation to programming?

We do not provide busing services at this time. Breakthrough students are responsible for commuting to our after-school and summer programs, whether through public transportation, car pool, or parent transportation. We will provide free MetroCards during the summer and after-school program – if students don’t already have one from their school – so students can travel to programming. When possible, we will connect BTNY students to others at their site to arrange joint commuting.

Breakthrough New York has been a great resource and provided an incredible support and preparation for our students applying to highly competitive school programs. Our students’ journey with Breakthrough has been transformative, and we look forward to our continued partnership.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I expose Breakthrough students to my college?

Reach out to schedule an in-person or virtual college visit or information session. We also host admissions officers at our college workshops to review students’ personal statements or provide insights on specific topics, such as the transition to college.

How does Breathrough support college students?

Breakthrough provides college students with personalized coaching, virtual workshops, internship and career guidance, and ongoing community-building. We also have an Access and Opportunity Fund that awards grants to Breakthrough students that cover short-term financial needs or fund professional and educational opportunities.

While we might all work to create college access for students, we have to understand that access looks different for each student. We can’t say one size fits all and expect students to succeed. BTNY creates different pathways and avenues for access by embracing the diversity in their community.
